Jackson Hole is known for its seclusion and wide-open spaces. While that may make getting here and around a challenge at times, it is also what adds to the allure of this remote mountain getaway.
That doesn't mean, however, that the valley lacks the conveniences of modern travel. American, Delta, Northwest, United and Frontier serve Jackson Hole Airport, which also sees heavy private jet traffic.
Once in the valley, residents and visitors can use personal vehicles, public transportation or a series of pathways to travel throughout Teton County. Pathways enjoy a special place in the hearts of valley residents and have been proudly supported through tax referendums. There are just a few highway routes into the Jackson Hole and there are few redundant roads. That can mean heavy traffic during the peak summer season, when the population of this small town more closely resembles a big city. Be prepared for bumper-to-bumper traffic during peak times of the day in July and August.
Those who'd rather not drive can use the bus system, Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit, or START, though it serves limited locations. For a minimal cost, riders can travel to locations in the Town of Jackson, Wilson and Teton Village. But don't plan on START taking you to the airport or Grand Teton National Park. Officials have yet to implement service north of town. On weekdays, START offers service to and from Star Valley and Teton Valley, Idaho, mostly used for Jackson workers who live outside the valley.
The county continues to improve its paved pathway system for pedestrians. Bikers can hop on their wheels and travel from town to Wilson or Teton Village. They also can ride pathways south to the recreation area of Game Creek. A paved pathway north, where it will meet with a new route in Grand Teton National Park, is expected to be complete in two years.
