Community leaders like to think of Jackson as the heart of the valley. Because it serves as the county seat and home to most government and commercial activities, it can be overlooked as a place to live.
That’s a mistake. For one, living in Jackson puts town residents near the services they need. With a home in the right spot, one can lead a relatively low-impact and carless life, going to the store, post office and work via bus, bike or foot. Secondly, town is one of the most fun places to enjoy the Jackson Hole lifestyle.
Powder days at Snow King – “the town hill” – may not feature the deepest snow, but there are rarely crowds. Plus, Snow King serves as a gateway to the Gros Ventre backcountry.
East Jackson residents can walk out their door, hike up Cache Creek Canyon and by nightfall be camping in the Gros Ventre Wilderness among stunning alpine lakes.
Bicyclists can head out the National Elk Refuge Road for popular points such as Curtis Canyon or even Jackson Peak. Town neighborhoods are slowly being redeveloped. Prospective homeowners can find 1970s three-bedroom, ranch-style dwellings or modern apartments that offer the ease of living found on properties without lards.
The Town of Jackson was named in 1894 after Davey Jackson, who spent a winter in the late 1800s on Jackson Lake. It is the only incorporated municipality in the region and is governed by a five-member town council, including Jackson’s mayor.
Today, residents can find a bustling arts, music, theater and dance scene, anchored by the $35 million Jackson Hole Center for the Arts. The National Museum of Wildlife Art also offers nearly 4,000 pieces in the wildlife genre. The town also boasts more than 60 art galleries. Jackson also has a bustling culinary scene, with high-end restaurants, quaint cafés and sports bars. For more information about community amenities, please visit our Community Info section.
