Alta, the last stop before Grand Targhee Resort, retains its small-town, agrarian roots. While development has sprouted in this enclave west of the Tetons, families that have worked the land for generations remain.
Although separated from Jackson Hole by a mountain range, Alta residents enjoy many of the benefits other Teton County, Wyoming, residents enjoy such as no state income tax, a grade school that is part of the Teton County School District and the Alta branch of the Teton County Library system. Alta Elementary School was awarded Blue Ribbon status by the federal government in 2008.
Alta is also an access point to the western flanks of the Teton Range. The Tetons generally slope more gradually on their western side than on the steeper, eastern Jackson Hole side and offer a wide variety of access for recreation.
Above Alta sits Grand Targhee Resort. This year-round resort offers 3,000 acres of downhill skiing and snowboarding plus 15 kilometers of Nordic skiing in the winter. In the summer, mountain bikers can either ride out of the base area to access trails or they can use lifts to haul bikes up the mountain. Through a land swap, the resort gained title to the base area. A development plan has been approved that could bring homes, condos and more overnight lodging to the resort.
